Halfway between the origin and estuary of the Havel river the bike trail of the same name "kisses " the metropolis Berlin in Spandau! Particularly interesting for cyclists: the Havel Bike Trail runs partly on the Berlin-Wall Trail in Berlin-Spandau making the capital’s westernmost district the ideal starting point to learn something of German history and landscapes such as the Mecklenburg Lake District, the Ruppin Country, the Havel Country or the Altmark all on two wheels! On a predominantly flat to slightly hilly course, which is mostly away from car traffic on paved bike trails or side roads, the traditional northeast German cities such as Potsdam and Oranienburg can be reached by bicycle.

Also the cities of Brandenburg/Havel with its cathedral, the optics-city Rathenow, or the picturesque city of Havelberg are part of the nearly 400-mile bike trail system which will get additional appreciation in thecoming year during the federal horticultural show 2015 "Havel Region".

Experience History

You can also experience Spandau’s centuries-old
history as a fortress city in places other than the citadel: On select days you can visit the ruins of the “Fort Hahneberg”. This is the last Prussian artillery fort built from 1882 to 1888 at Hahneberg in Staaken. It is located in the former inner-German border strip, which stayed untouched for decades and has been reclaimed by nature.
From April to October there are guided tours where you can admire those special natural landscapes and historic craft skills of the 19th Century in an authentic place.
The Air Force Museum documents the history of the German military aviation from its beginnings to the present in the tower and adjacent hangars on the former airfield of the airport Berlin-Gatow. From air force uniform from the imperial period, MIG 21 to starfighters everything can be visited free of charge Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00.
